Two Indicators You Need a Leadership Wellness Check

The tricky thing about CEO Disease is unless you’re consciously looking for symptoms of it, you’re none the wiser that you are infected. And you’re none the wiser because you get glowing feedback all of the time from the people you lead and your teams.

Stop right there. If you’re thinking to yourself, you know, I do hear a lot of really great things, all of the time, you just might have CEO Disease.

Think about it, if you 1) only hear really good things from your people or nothing at all -or- 2) feel wary of the feedback you do receive, it’s time to do a CEO Disease wellness check.

1. You either hear really good things from your people or you don’t hear from them at all.

If you’re asked by others what your employees or the people you lead think of you, do you find yourself answering that question with something like this:

They think I’m stellar. I only get good reviews.”
-or-
I haven’t heard anything lately and no news is good news, right.

If you parrot similar sentiments, you might have CEO Disease. You need a plan to actively and continually seek honest feedback so you can continue to grow and evolve as a leader.

2. You often feel wary about the feedback you do receive.

Now you may think, as I have myself, that you’re pretty good about asking for honest feedback. Yet, you still get persistent, positive, reassuring feedback and you think to yourself, man this is just too good to be true. If you feel that in your gut, it likely is to good to be true.

The reality is, you might have inadvertently created an environment where it is just too uncomfortable for those you lead to give you honest feedback. Your idea might not be as brilliant as your team led you to believe, they just didn't want to tell you the flaws of your brilliant idea to your face.

CEO Disease doesn’t have to be terminal. I struggle with it from time to time too, so you’re not alone.
